DIY: Tonic Herbal Electuaries

Electuaries are a simple and delicious preparation for incorporating herbs into our daily lives, as a little bit of honey helps the medicine go down! Featuring powdered herbs and honey, this traditional remedy is convenient to have on hand for stirring into your beverages throughout the day, especially now that we’re in the blessed season of tea and hot tonics. You can also enjoy it by the spoonful, which is probably the preferred way for children!

Although traditionally made with freshly powdered herbs that lend to a rather grainy consistency, we find that our extremely fine powders integrate quite seamlessly with the honey. Another added benefit of utilizing our offerings to make a customized blend is the potency you can achieve, thanks to our extraction process; our powders condense a lot more plant matter than you’d expect per volume.

First, we’ll explain the basics of crafting your own herbal electuary, with some recipe ideas to follow.

Preparation Method:

If your honey flows well, skip to the part where you add the powders. If your honey is more thick and viscous, follow all the steps:

  • Take an 8 oz glass, lidded jar of honey and place it into a double boiler pot
  • Once the water boils, allow the honey to warm up for a few minutes on medium heat
  • Pour the honey into a Pyrex measuring jug
  • Add 2-3 tbsp combined of the Root + Bones extract powders of your choice
  • Add up to 1 tsp of any other spices like ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, etc.
  • Stir well and scoop back into the glass jar.

Rose, Cardamom + Reishi Electuary for Yin/Yang balancing and nervine properties.

  • 1 tbsp Rose extract powder
  • 1.5 tbsp Reishi extract powder
  • ½ tsp ground cardamom

Rhodiola, Cacao + Cinnamon Electuary to uplift and provide adaptogenic immune support.

  • 1 tbsp Rhodiola extract powder
  • 1.5 tbsp cacao
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Astragalus + Vanilla Electuary for comprehensive protection you can soften into.

  • 2 tbsp Astragalus
  • 1 tsp ground vanilla bean

Pearl + Pine Pollen Electuary to remineralize and support cellular health.

  • 1 tbsp Pearl powder
  • 1 tbsp Pine Pollen

Cordyceps, Ginger + Turmeric to replenish our deepest energy reserves + support immunity.

  • 2 tbsp Cordyceps extract powder
  • 1.5 tsp Turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp ginger powder

There are about 16 servings of 1 tbsp per jar, or even more if you take less honey in your tea. You can also use these recipes to inspire your own functional creamers. Just add all of the ingredients per 8 oz of cream into a blender to integrate well, and sweeten to taste. Enjoy!
